Thai woman arrested 'for stealing from tourists at airports'

Post ImagesA Thai woman was arrested for allegedly stealing from tourists at airports.

The suspected serial thief was accused of snatching valuables from weary travellers as they slept in Bangkok's airport terminals.

Police tracked her down at a resort in Singburi province, around 160 kilometres (100 miles) north of the capital city, where she was detained on a warrant issued by the Samut Prakan Provincial Court.

Police Lieutenant General Saksira Phuek-am, commissioner of the Tourist Police, said the woman was charged with 'theft at an airport at night'.

He said: 'The suspect has been handed over to the inquiry officer at Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station for further legal proceedings. Preparations are underway to return the stolen belongings to the victim.'

Officials said the arrest followed a report from an alleged victim, who claimed she had valuables worth 300,000 baht stolen.

The complainant told officers she had fallen asleep at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport terminal on May 21, before waking to discover her blue handbag had vanished.

The bag reportedly contained an iPhone 7 Plus, a passport, ID card, designer sunglasses and thousands in foreign currency, including US dollars, euros, pounds and dirhams.

Tourist Police coordinated with airport security to review CCTV footage. They later confirmed that the female suspect was the same person linked to thefts involving a Malaysian and an Indian tourist at Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport on May 16 and 20.

They added that she has a long history of criminal offences and is suspected of repeatedly targeting vulnerable travellers inside airport terminals.

Authorities said an investigation is underway to identify additional victims.
