South Korean fugitive over drug and cannabis smuggling from Thailand to home country arrested
A South Korean fugitive was arrested over a drug and cannabis smuggling from Thailand to his home country.
The suspect, identified only as Lee, reportedly ran a transnational trafficking ring as he lived the high life in Thailand.
Immigration and narcotics officers launched a manhunt at the request of South Korean authorities, who were seeking the fugitive over fraud and cross-border drug smuggling.
Police tracked down the alleged drug lord at a luxury condominium on resort island Phuket, on August 12.
He reportedly confessed to being the individual in the Interpol Red Notice, and consented to a search of his room.
Authorities seized a mobile phone and three debit cards, believed to be used in the commission of the crimes.
Lee was charged locally with overstaying for 2,992 days.
Police said a joint investigation will continue with South Korean authorities.
Officials said that since 2018, Lee and his accomplices allegedly defrauded victims of more than 800 million won.
He also allegedly headed a network smuggling illegal drugs and cannabis - which is legal and easily available in Thailand - to South Korea, where the substances were sold online to local dealers.
He reportedly had a criminal history involving drugs and other offences, including prostitution, assault and fraud, with more than 23 cases recorded.
Police Major General Phanthana Nuchanart said the Immigration Bureau was strengthening cooperation with domestic and international security agencies to track down and arrest fugitives wanted under Interpol notices.
He said: ‘Thailand will not serve as a safe haven for fugitives or transnational criminals.
‘Strict legal action will be taken against foreign nationals who pose a threat to the country's security and public order.'
